In this blog post, we are going to feature a Patek Philippe watch guide.
Patek Philippe watches are the most common favorite and most often a place of pride in a watch collector’s collection. Patek Philippe watches are highly sought-after timepieces,
Patek Philippe History
Patek Philippe the brand was first established in 1839. Originally founded by Polish watchmakers Antoni Patek and Franciszek Czapek. After the partnership between Patek and Czapek ended, two new brands – Czapek & Cie., and a partnership between Antonio Patek and Adrien Philippe.
Since then, Patek Philippe includes a selection of over one hundred and sixty timepieces and more than fifty in-house movements. In the 1800s Patek Philippe was the brand that was creating timepieces designed for royalty. Patek Philippe continues to thrive as a well-sought-after brand to this day.
Patek Philippe earned its recognition as one of the “Holy Trinity” watches. Next to Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin, these timepieces are highly regarded among watchmakers and horology enthusiasts.
Patek Philippe Watch Guide Nautilus Collection
Gerald Genta, the world-renowned watch designer, created the Patek Philippe Nautilus timepiece in 1976. At the time, the Stern family the owners of Patek Philippe and Gerald Gentian set out to create a timepiece that would be a remembrance of the family’s passion, yachting. The bezel on the Patek Philippe Nautilus is meant to resemble a porthole window of a ship or yacht.
The Patek Philippe Nautilus is known as a luxury sports watch known for its rounded-octagonal case and porthole bezel. The iconic dial on the Patek Philippe Nautilus is horizontally embossed.
There are many top-tier options to choose from in the Patek Philippe Nautilus collection, there are diamond and gold dressier options and plain dial options in stainless steel. The Patek Philippe Nautilus reference 5711 was discontinued making this model a more exclusive Patek Philippe Nautilus.
Although the most popular Patek Philippe Nautilus reference 5711 was discontinued in 2021, Patek Philippe decided to feature its last version which included a new green dial. The Patek Philippe Nautilus timepiece with the green dial has a case size of forty millimeters and is considered the ultimate luxury sports watch. The material on the timepiece is made of steel rather than gold like other rare versions of this Patek Philippe Nautilus.
Patek Philippe’s bracelet design is completely hand-polished. Each link on the bracelet of a Patek Philippe Nautilus is individually cut which takes an average of six to seven minutes to cut the per link. The bracelet itself is completely assembled by hand.
Patek Philippe Watch Guide Aquanaut Collection
In 1997, what today is considered the Patek Philippe Aquanaut was originally deemed the 5060A-A for “Acier” which means “steel” in French. When this Patek Philippe Aquanaut was introduced, it was the first time a rubber watch strap was added to a Patek Philippe timepiece. The “Tropical Watch Strap” by Patek Philippe was meant to resist salt water and included a new checkerboard pattern on the dial.
The Patek Philippe Aquanaut is the Patek Philippe Nautilus’ younger sibling. The Patek Philippe Aquanaut has many similar sports luxury features as the Patek Philippe Nautilus but is within a cheaper price range. Rock and Roll star Paul Mccartney owns a Patek Philippe Aquanaut.
In 2011, the Patek Philippe Aquanaut Travel Time was introduced, 5164A Travel Time by Patek Philippe. This new Patek Philippe Travel Time reference 5165A included an extra skeletonized hand in addition to the minute and hour hands on the dial to incorporate better readability for a second-time zone.
Currently, there are around 15 models of Patek Philippe Aquanauts worth keeping an eye on. Seven Patek Philippe Aquanauts that men gravitate towards, and eight that are better sized for a women’s wrist (however both unisex). The Patek Philippe Aquanaut can be perceived as a collection from Patek Philippe for consumers who are looking for a less formal timepiece and wearable for more versatile occasions.
The most pronounced difference between the Patek Philippe Nautilus and the Patek Philippe Aquanaut is the dial. Rather than the horizontal lines that are featured on the dial of the Patek Philippe Nautilus, the Patek Philippe Aquanaut sports a grid-like pattern on the dial that is meant to resemble longitude and latitude. There are numerous variations of the Patek Philippe Aquanaut that include multiple dial colors and movements, GMT variations, and quartz pieces.
Patek Philippe Watch Guide on The Grand Complications
The Grand Complications collection is Patek Philippe’s most complex range of watches with a new timepiece being added to the collection every year. Every year, Patek Philippe releases a new Grand Complications watch that is highly anticipated by horology enthusiasts. Patek Philippe has slightly different materials, colors, and complications to their timepieces added every year to the Grand Complications collection.
For example, one of the most sought-after timepieces from Patek Philippe’s Grand Complications collection is the Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar. The Perpetual Calendar timepiece features a full-date calendar that does not need adjusting for one hundred years.
The Complications Collection
A complication timepiece is a more accessible version of the Grand Complications collection of watches by Patek Philippe, having fewer complications and simpler functionality. Complication timepieces are more affordable and feature GMT versions, annual calendars, and chronographs.
There are at least two to three different complication options available in this collection. Most include very beautifully designed dials that set this line apart.
The Calatrava Collection
The Patek Philippe Calatrava timepiece features a round case and has a retro look to it. The Patek Philippe Calatrava is a classic dress watch with a vintage charm and was first introduced by Patek Philippe in the late 1920s.
The Calatrava collection was originally launched during the Great Depression in 1932 to build a timepiece that inspired a remedy to the draining accounts of Europeans and Americans at the time. The Calatrava collection created by Patek Philippe broke the mold for affordable timepieces made by the brand and its purpose was to last for generations.
There are many different bezels, dials, and lug design options for the Calatrava timepiece by Patek Philippe. There are luxe diamond-encrusted and hand-crafted designs as well as dual-time models available.
The Calatrava timepiece created by Patek Philippe features a rounded case and a white matte-textured dial. The black Roman numerals on the dial of this timepiece add a striking and elegant contrast that includes a classic appeal to this Patek Philippe.
The Golden Ellipse Collection
The Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse timepiece features a unique ellipse-shaped case. The case of the Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse is based on the Golden Ratio, the ideal shape for beautiful objects. The Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse timepiece was first introduced in 1968, today, the design remains timeless in that the design is based on a mathematical object of beauty and is unisex in nature, and appeals to all consumers.
The Twenty-Four Collection
This collection designed by Patek Philippe was originally created for women and remains so today. The Twenty-Four collection comes in case of sizes thirty-six millimeters and under, in both round and rectangular options. These timepieces are usually complemented by diamonds to add a more feminine touch to the timepieces. These Twenty-Four collection timepieces were especially popular in the late 1990s and were covered in jewels.
The Gondolo Collection
The Gondolo collection of timepieces by Patek Philippe is another collection created by the brand that was aimed at women. These were a collection of timepieces that were smaller in case size that included watch shapes that are memorable of an art-deco era. These Gondolo collections of timepieces come in various options of case shapes and sizes and usually are encrusted with jewels.
